6 Home Remedies for Wisdom Tooth Pain

Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of seventeen and twenty-five or maybe even in your advanced years.
1. Clove or Dentist’s Clove Oil
Many a dentist uses formulations and medicine that are clove oil-based because of its analgesic and anesthetic properties that numbs the excruciating pain. Moreover, its antibacterial and antiseptic properties control infection and reduce gum swelling also.
Both clove oil or buds are usable as a means to temporary relief. Dip a small cotton ball in some clove oil and apply it to the wisdom tooth and the surrounding gum area twice or thrice daily. Should the clove oil feel too strong and cause irritation, diluting it with some olive oil helps.
In addition, you could keep two cloves in your mouth and keep chewing on them slowly to release the oil. Another method is to make a paste of some crushed fresh garlic, rock salt, and clove oil and apply it to the affected area. Let it settle for about ten minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water, once or twice daily.
2. Guava Leaves
Yet another time-tested home remedy, Guava leaves also relive wisdom tooth-induced pain effectively. They contain a bioflavonoid called Quercetin that is known to have antispasmodic, antimicrobial, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties.
You could crush a few guava leaves and chew them slowly to release the juice, which will reduce the pain. Or, you could boil about six leaves in one cup of water, allowing it to cool. This could be used as mouthwash twice a day.
3. Common Salt
Any dentist will tell you that an effective home remedy that reduces gum inflammation and prevents or fights infection. Take a cup of lukewarm water and add a teaspoonful of salt, stirring to dissolve it completely.
Take a large sip and swish it in your mouth a couple of times daily, particularly after meals to reduce pain and prevent further infection. On top of this, mix equal amounts of salt with pepper, adding a little water to make a thick paste and apply it on the tooth. Keep for a while and rinse. Repeat until the pain subsides.
4. Peppermint
Peppermint wards off oral bacteria that cause infection. A dentist often advises rubbing peppermint oil on the affected area and rinsing off with lukewarm salt water to alleviate the pain. Dried leaves of peppermint may be soaked in a cupful of hot water for about 20 minutes. Subsequently, use the solution to swish or gargle for about 30 seconds and then spit it out. Do it twice or thrice daily until you feel better.
5. Asafetida
A pinch of Asafetida applied to the wisdom tooth directly reduces pain and gum swelling. Or you could mix two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice with a quarter teaspoonful of asafetida powder and heat it slightly. Dip some cotton wool in it and place it on the wisdom tooth a couple of times daily for relief.
6. Onion
Chewing raw onion slices or directly placing a piece of raw onion on the tooth several times daily also provides relief.
Although you will have to ultimately visit your dentist to get the tooth extracted, these effective home remedies are bound to give you some relief.
